An architecture practice rooted in the Maldives.

About

Conics Studio is an architecture and design practice based in the Maldives, founded by Ahmed Ashraf. We work across residential, hospitality, commercial, and public projects, creating architecture that responds to the character of each place.

Our work begins with understanding the site — its scale, climate, surroundings, views, light, wind, and the way people will experience the space. We believe good architecture should not simply be placed on a site, but should grow from it.

From early concepts and planning through architectural and structural design, documentation, interiors, and construction, we work closely with our clients to develop projects that are thoughtful, practical, and built to last.

Working in the islands brings its own opportunities and challenges. We consider local conditions, available materials, construction methods, and the realities of building in a coastal environment at every stage of our work.

Philosophy

We believe architecture should belong to its place.

In the Maldives, every site has a relationship with the sea, sun, wind, vegetation, and surrounding community. These elements are not simply background to a project; they are part of the architecture.

We favour clear forms, natural light, honest materials, comfortable proportions, and spaces that feel calm and connected to their surroundings. Rather than designing around trends, we look for solutions that are appropriate to the site and will continue to feel relevant over time.

Our approach is also grounded in practicality. A beautiful building must work well, perform in its environment, and be realistic to build and maintain. We bring design, structure, materials, and construction considerations together from the beginning.

For us, good architecture is not about making the most noise. It is about creating spaces that feel right.

Approach

Every project begins with a conversation.

We take time to understand the client, the brief, the site, the budget, and what the project needs to achieve. We then explore ideas through sketches, drawings, models, material studies, and site visits, gradually turning an initial idea into a clear architectural direction.

We work collaboratively throughout the process, involving clients and relevant consultants at the right stages. Architectural design, structural thinking, interiors, documentation, and construction are considered as connected parts of the same project rather than separate processes.

Our design process is careful but practical. We test ideas, question assumptions, and refine the details before they reach the construction site. This allows us to balance design ambition with budget, buildability, durability, and the realities of working in the Maldives.

From the first sketch to the finished building, our aim is to make the process clear for the client and ensure that every decision contributes to a coherent final result.
